Most people who seek counseling/therapy with another person along in the room, present stating they need help with their communication. Why is that you may wonder.
In my thinking, communication is the shared understanding between persons and thus, when our shared understanding is faulty, confused, withheld, or blaming we have lost that mutual understanding that bonds us together. Too often, we hasten to be heard rather than slowing down to understand. Listening, it turns out, is a major part of communication!
As you may have noted in my biography, I have specialized training in Interpersonal Communication by Drs Sherod and Phyllis Miller, a wonderful framework of how to speak and listen well with others. Additionally, many of you may have learned of Drs John and Julie Gottman’s communication insights and research. Both bodies of work lend to stronger skills and awareness in being able to make yourself – or a topic – known as well as how to understand what the other person may be striving to illuminate.
There are some fundamental frameworks for good communication, and I am happy to assist you in learning these, practicing these, and supporting these within your life so that you can offer your best Self to others and appreciate Other’s best selves along the way!
